This week’s program will include a return appearance by Joyce Bulifant, the actress that most of you know from her many appearances on such popular game shows as Password and the CBS Match Game, as well as her roles in such films and TV series as Airplane!, Disney’s The Happiest Millionaire, Love Thy Neighbor, Perry Mason, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. While everyone knows Joyce for her buoyant personality and effervescent smile, that public face was not always easy to maintain in the face of her real-life struggle with dyslexia and feelings of self worth, and a series of tumultuous marriages characterized by alcoholism, co-dependency, addictive behavior, and domestic abuse.
A story of eternal love that is woven through the fabric of the entertainment world, Joyce’s book, My Four Hollywood Husbands, is a memoir of her life and career, interwoven through the story of her marriages to James MacArthur, Edward Mallory, William Asher and Roger Perry. A beacon of hope for anyone who finds themselves caught in the web of addiction, the book also reminds us that, as Joyce herself puts it, “If you’re not afraid to learn and to keep trying, there can be a happy ending.”
We’ll talk to Joyce about her book, plus she will share a few memories of her fellow Mary Tyler Moore Show cast mates Betty White, Gavin MacLeod, and Ed Asner. Joyce Bulifant joins us in our second hour.
Our first hour will include Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with actor Ernest Harden Jr. (The Jeffersons, White Men Can’t Jump, Velvet Jesus) and Jay Moriarty, longtime writer/producer of The Jeffersons and other Norman Lear shows, and the author of Honky in the House: Writing and Producing The Jeffersons. Ernest and Jay will share some more behind-the-scenes stories from The Jeffersons, plus we’ll ask Ernest about starring opposite Bette Davis in the CBS World Premiere movie White Mama, one of the last films that Davis ever made.
Marla Gibbs, Ernest Harden Jr., and Jay Mortiarty will all appear at the next Hollywood Show, which will take place on Friday, Apr. 15 and Saturday, Apr. 16 at the Burbank Marriott Hotel, 2500 North Hollywood Way in Burbank, California. For tickets and more information, go to HollywoodShow.com
Plus: We’ll play Part 2 of our conversation with Kelly Conway, the eldest child—and only daughter—of comedy star Tim Conway, and an accomplished costume designer and wardrobe stylist in the motion picture industry. Kelly’s memoir, My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad, shows us the quiet side of Tim Conway, including his dedication as a father, the incredible resourcefulness that he displayed throughout his life and career, and the many indelible life lessons that he dispensed to Kelly and her five brothers (even in such unlikely places as the Santa Anita race track). Kelly Conway will join us in our first hour.
My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad: Growing Up with Tim Conway in The Funniest House in America is available in hardcover and as an eBook through Lyons Press and Amazon.com and as an audiobook through Audible.
