Known to fans of NBC’s This Is Us as Marilyn Pearson (Milo Ventimigilia’s mom), Laura Niemi currently stars in Pool Boy, a new stage comedy, set in Los Angeles during the 2020 pandemic, about two people who are desperate for human contact after months of isolation—and who find themselves attracted to each other, despite their contrasting personalities and rusty social skills. That concept hits close to home for all of us. We’ll ask Laura about Pool Boy (including the logistics required to mount this production), plus she’ll reflect on her experience on This Is Us when she joins us in our first hour.
The first site-specific production of The Lost Angels Theatre Company (the stage company founded by Laura Niemi), Pool Boy will be performed outdoors and poolside, in a Covid-friendly atmosphere, from a private home on Mulholland Drive overlooking the Hollywood Hills, on Saturday and Sunday evenings between now and August 22. For tickets and more information, go to LostAngelsTheatre.com or Facebook.com/LostAngelsTheatre. The sixth and final season of This Is Us will premiere on NBC either in late 2021 or early 2022.
This week’s program will also include a return visit by renowned author, director, and screenwriter Marc Cushman. Marc’s latest book, These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s, is a three-volume history of Star Trek/biography of Gene Roddenberry that chronicles the ten-year period spanning the cancellation of the original series in 1969 through the making and release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. All three volumes were written with the cooperation of the Roddenberry estate and include production reports, ratings, memos written by Gene Roddenberry, vintage press coverage, plus many original interviews by Marc Cushman himself.
All three volumes of These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s are available through Jacobs Brown Media Group. This week, however, we’ll focus particularly on Volume 3, which depicts the various battles for control that Roddenberry waged with Paramount Pictures throughout the production of the film; why filming began in 1979 before the script was even finished; why the expensive special effects nearly sank the film; and the brief yet strange controversy involving Roddenberry, NBC, and the short-lived sci-fi parody Quark. Marc Cushman will join us in our first hour.
Also this week: With the official Star Trek convention returning to Las Vegas on Aug. 11-15, 2021, and with September 2021 marking the fifty-fifth anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek on NBC, we’ll mark both occasions with an encore presentation of our August 2012 conversation with Lawrence Montaigne (A Vulcan Odyssey, The Guardian List), the accomplished, author, and screenwriter who passed away in March 2017. Known to fans of The Original Series as Decius in “Balance of Terror” and Stonn in “Amok Time,” Lawrence also appeared in twenty-five motion pictures, including The Great Escape with Steve McQueen and James Garner, plus episodes of such classic TV series as The Fugitive, The Rogues, Burke’s Law, Batman, The Invaders, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Streets of San Francisco, and Dallas. He also lived an epic life outside of acting, including real-life adventures as a cowboy in Israel, as a photojournalist in Rome, and as a gold smuggler in such far off places as Bangkok and Hong Kong. We’ll replay our conversation with Lawrence Montaigne in our second hour.
