We’ll make another visit to the Deluxe Apartment in the Sky this week as we welcome two stars of The Jeffersons, Marla Gibbs and Ernest Harden Jr.
Known to viewers around the world as Florence Johnston—the feisty, quick-witted, wise-cracking maid who became one of Louise Jefferson’s friends and confidants, and who never failed to put George in his place when necessary—Marla Gibbs also starred as Mary Jenkins on 227, another long-running series in which she also played a major role behind the scenes, including the casting of both Jackée Harry and Regina King. Marla is still very active today; she recently did a four-episode arc on Days of Our Lives, plus she has several projects in the works, including a movie with Snoop Dogg. Marla Gibbs will join us in our second hour.
Fans of The Jeffersons know Ernest Harden Jr. as Marcus Henderson, a young man from the streets whom George took under his wing after he hired him as an employee at Jefferson Cleaners. Prior to The Jeffersons, Ernest was directed by Sydney Pollock in Three Days of the Condor and by Martin Scorsese in Taxi Driver—his first two screen credits, by the way—plus he has also an extensive career as a stage actor, both in New York and in L.A. Ernest’s other film credits include The Front, White Men Can’t Jump, and White Mama, a CBS World Premiere movie starring Bette Davis. Ernest Harden Jr. will join us in our second hour.
Also joining us in our second hour will be Jay Moriarty, longtime writer/producer of The Jeffersons and other Norman Lear productions, and the author of Honky in the House: Writing and Producing The Jeffersons.
Marla Gibbs, Ernest Harden Jr., and Jay Moriarty are all scheduled to appear at the next Hollywood Show, which will take place on Friday, Apr. 15 and Saturday, Apr. 16 at the Burbank Marriot Hotel, 2500 North Hollywood Way in Burbank, California. For tickets and more information, go to HollywoodShow.com
Also this week: We will welcome back Broadway star and Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, and producer Kevin Spirtas (After Forever). Fans of daytime television know Kevin best as the scheming Dr. Craig Wesley on Days of Our Lives, a character that Kevin played, off and on, for about twenty years. Kevin recently returned to Days as part of a stunning story arc that revealed that Dr. Wesley is gay. We’ll ask Kevin what brought about his return to Days, as well as how fans have reacted to it, when he joins us in our first hour.
Kevin Spirtas, Lindsay Wagner, Joyce Bulifant, and Dee Wallace are among the stars that you can see on Hollywood Museum Squares, the special five-episode tribute to The Hollywood Squares that is available for streaming on demand through StellarTickets.com. All five episodes of Hollywood Museum Squares are available both individually and as a bundle. (The episode featuring Kevin is Episode No. 2 and is hosted by Tom Bergeron.) All proceeds from the sales of Hollywood Museum Squares episodes support the efforts of the Hollywood Museum. Go to StellarTickets.com for more information.
Plus: This week’s show will include Part 1 of a two-part interview with Kelly Conway, the eldest child—and only daughter—of comedy star Tim Conway, and an accomplished costume designer and wardrobe stylist in the motion picture industry who has worked as a stylist on many commercials and music videos, including projects with Tom Petty and Garth Brooks.
Kelly Conway is also the author of My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad, a memoir of growing up with her dad and mom and five brothers in a household that was often as madcap and hilarious as the moments of comic genius that Tim Conway displayed on The Carol Burnett Show. Kelly’s book also shows us the quiet side of Tim Conway, including his dedication as a father, the indelible life lessons that he dispensed to Kelly and her five brothers (even in such unlikely places as the Santa Anita race track), and how Kelly often drew on those lessons during the last five years of her father’s life, when she engaged in a legal battle with her stepmother over Tim Conway’s conservatorship.
My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad: Growing Up with Tim Conway in the Funniest House in America is available in hardcover and as an eBook through Lyons Press and Amazon.com and as an audiobook through Audible.
