We will play Part 2 of a conversation with Martha Bolton, longtime comedy writer for Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller, and the first and only female staff writer that Bob Hope ever hired. Martha is the co-author, along by Linda Hope, Bob Hope’s daughter, of Dear Bob: Bob Hope’s Wartime Correspondence with the G.I.s of World War II, a collection of just a few of thousands of letters, postcards, and packages that Bob Hope every day from our fighting men and women of World War II that is as close as to a replica of Bob Hope’s personal scrapbook as you can possibly get.
We’ll talk some more with Martha about the special bond that always existed between Bob Hope and our troops, plus she’ll take us inside the writers’ room, so to speak, of a typical Bob Hope television special or in-person performance—including the importance that Hope always placed on his monologues. Martha Bolton will join us in our second hour.
Also in our second hour: Iconic producer Marty Krofft will join us as we pay tribute to Billie Hayes, the actress who was an integral part of many of the live action Saturday morning shows of the late ’60s and throughout the 1970s that were brought to us every week by Sid & Marty Krofft Productions (including, most notably, as Witchiepoo on H.R. Pufnstuf and Weenie the Genie on Lidsville). Billie Hayes passed away on Thursday, Apr. 29, 2021 at age ninety-six. Also an accomplished voice actress on many animated movies and TV series, Hayes played Mammy Yokum in the original Broadway production of Li’l Abner, plus she reprised that role in the 1959 movie and on television.
