Betty White’s legacy as the First Lady of Television goes back to 1939, when, at age seventeen, she appeared in an experimental broadcast originating from a car dealership in Hollywood, California. From there, she not only embraced the new medium, but created many forms of television programming, including hosting and producing one of the first daytime talk shows and serving as both producer and star of the sitcom Life with Elizabeth—all in an era when men dominated television, and all before she left her mark in the world of TV game shows, not to mention her memorable roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland.
With Betty White’s 100th birthday just a few weeks away, Ray Richmond will join us to help us celebrate her life and career. Ray’s latest book, Betty White: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life, provides a visual salute to the eighty-year performing career of the entertainment legend, including her lifelong passion for animals; the various glass ceilings that White broke as a performer and as a producer during the first decade of television as we know it; her legacy on such TV game shows as Password, What’s My Line?, and Match Game; her skills in unscripted television (including her own talk show, The Pet Set, and her years hosting NBC’s coverage of both the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade); and more. Packed with photographs—many of which, I am certain, you have never seen before—Betty White: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life also includes a foreword by Gavin MacLeod, plus tributes from such friends and colleagues as Ed Asner, Carol Burnett, Candice Bergen, and Ed. Weinberger. Ray Richmond will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We will welcome back Mark Shaw, investigative reporter, former criminal defense attorney and cable TV legal analyst, and the author of more than twenty-five books, including The Reporter Who Knew Too Much, a biography of Dorothy Kilgallen, the Pulitzer-Prize nominated newspaper columnist and panelist on What’s My Line?whose mysterious death in November 1965 remains unsolved to this day.
Mark’s latest book,Collateral Damage: The Mysterious Deaths of Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Kilgallen and The Ties That Bind Them to Robert Kennedy and the JFK Assassination, not only reveals more than fifty similarities between the lives and deaths of Kilgallen and film legend Marilyn Monroe, but makes the argument that their connections to President John F. Kennedy—and, specifically, the ambitions of Kennedy patriarch Joseph Kennedy and the war against the mob waged by Robert F. Kennedy in the early 1960s—ultimately led to the demise to Kilgallen, Monroe, and JFK, all within forty months of each other. If nothing else,Collateral Damagestrips away the myths and misinformation surrounding the deaths of these three those figures, while underscoring the importance of primary sources. Mark Shaw joins us in our first hour.
