Wesley Hyatt will join us this week as we take a look at the network TV career of legendary comedian Bob Hope. For many of us, Hope was a fixture on television while we were growing up—not only for the frequent comedy variety spectaculars that he hosted on NBC for more than forty-five years, including his annual Christmas specials, but his fourteen appearances as host of the Academy Awards, his numerous guest appearances on just about every top variety show and daytime and late night talk show throughout the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, his official golf tournament that was televised on NBC, and even his own weekly anthology series.
But, though Bob Hope certainly left his mark on television—not to mention influenced just about every late night host through today through his use of the monologue—there is some concern that Hope is the verge of being forgotten. We’ll talk about that, and more, when Wesley Hyatt joins in our second hour.
Wesley Hyatt’s latest book, Bob Hope on TV: Thanks for the Video Memories, is a decade by decade look at nearly 1,000 hours of Bob Hope’s appearances on television from 1950 through 1996, including Hope’s acting roles on such shows as I Love Lucy, Get Smart, The Odd Couple and The Simpsons; his work on nearly 200 variety shows and specials; his memorable moments on game shows, talk shows, awards shows and sporting events; and his considerable contributions to documentaries and news programs. Wes screened close to 80 percent of the available video on Hope, plus he interviewed many of the writers, directors, producers and actors who worked with Hope over the years, including Marie Osmond, George Foreman, Gloria Loring, Pat Priest, JoAnne Worley, Gene Perret, Cathy Lee Crosby and our friend Bob Mills.
