Jim Abell spent three years as a staff writer for Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (NBC, 1968-1973), plus he wrote for other TV variety shows and specials during the 1970s, including Don’t Call Me Mama Anymore (a CBS special starring Cass Elliot) and many of the blackout sketches featuring Stuart Margolin, Barbara Minkus, Jim Hampton, Tracy Reed, and the other Love, American Style Players every week on Love, American Style. Jim also wrote comedy bits for the Doobie Brothers that the group performed during their official tour of 1973, plus he wrote material for Lily Tomlin’s second comedy album, And That’s the Truth, which Tomlin recorded at The Ice House in Pasadena, California in 1972.
Jim will take us inside the writing room of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, including the clever ways in which the show circumvented the network censors every week, as well as how he and his writing partner, Chet Dowling, found inspiration from Forest Lawn Cemetery (of all places). He’ll also share the story of how his journey in television began with a chance meeting with actor/comedian Harvey Korman. Jim Abell will join us in our first hour.
Our second hour will include Part 2 of a conversation that began a few weeks ago with Michael Shevack, award-winning ad writer and columnist, and the author of such books as Soul Lessons from The Wizard of Oz: How to Find Your Yellow Brick Road and The Six Fix: Spiritual Healthcare for a Stronger America. Recognized for his work on ad campaigns for such companies as Apple computers, Black & Decker, Colgate-Palmolive, and the U.S. Postal Service, Michael will tell us the back story of the spot for which he is probably best known: The iconic slogan for Gillette razors, “Gillette, the best a man can get.” Michael Shevack will join us in our second hour.
Also this week: We will bring you a special encore presentation of our March 2019 conversation with Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria and Michael Schlesinger. Will and Ryan are the stars, and Mike is the writer, producer and director, of The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster—the Rondo Award-nominated DVD collection of 1930s-style comedies that pay homage to The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and other vintage comedy teams from the Golden Era of Hollywood. The Biffle and Shooster shorts were filmed over a five-year period in the early 2010s, yet they look and sound as if they were actually unearthed from the 1930s. We’ll replay our conversation with Will Ryan, Nick Santa Maria and Michael Schlesinger in our first hour.
