More than four years have passed since the death of Robin Williams, the Academy Award-winning actor and comic genius whose kamikaze style and energetic humor took the entertainment world by storm first as a stand-up comedian, then on television as the star of Mork & Mindy, then finally as one of the biggest film stars of the 1990s and 2000s. While the world has not fully recovered from Williams’ death, we can take comfort in knowing that he left behind a vast body of work that all of us can still enjoy today.
Our guests this week will include David Steinberg, Robin Williams’ manager for more than forty years, up until Williams’ death in August 2014. David Steinberg is also executive producer of Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary from 2018 that is just one part of Robin Williams: Comic Genius, an astonishing new collection of vintage Robin Williams material that we will tell you about in our first hour.
This week’s program will also pay tribute to Ken Berry, the iconic entertainer who was once described as “a double-triple threat” because of his accomplishments as a singer, dancer and actor on stage, film, on television.
Ken Berry passed away on Dec. 1, 2018. We interviewed Ken on TV Confidential in January 2018 about his career in the entertainment industry, including his early years with the Billy Barnes Revue and working in Las Vegas alongside Abbott and Costello, his friendship with Buster Keaton (not to mention the major influence the silent film star had on his career), the important roles that Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball and Leonard Nimoy all played at various points of Ken’s career, and, of course, his successful runs on F Troop, Mayberry, R.F.D., and Mama’s Family. We will replay that conversation in our second hour.
