We will dedicate our entire two-hour program this week to the life and career of Carl Reiner, the Grammy Award-winning and multiple Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, producer, director, author, philanthropist and humanitarian who passed away on Monday, June 29 at age 98.
Whether you think of him as one of the writers and performers on Your Show of Shows; his many classic comedy routines with Mel Brooks (including, of course, The 2,000 Year Old Man); his work as a screenwriter and film director (including Enter Laughing, Where’s Poppa, Oh, God!, his four collaborations with Steve Martin, and his onscreen appearances in the Ocean’s Eleven movies); or as the writer, producer, director and creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Carl Reiner left his mark on three generations of comedians, comedy writers, and comic actors. If that’s not impressive enough, Reiner remained a relevant figure in the world of late night television and comedy in general until his dying day.
Our program this week will include remembrances from Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), who co-starred with Reiner (and was directed by him) in “Good Neighbor Maxine,” an episode of Reiner’s short-lived but fondly remembered comedy anthology series Good Heavens (ABC, 1976); former child star, and now accomplished director and voice actor, Moosie Drier, whom Reiner directed in Oh, God! (1976); singer/actress Ilene Graff (Mr. Belvedere), whose father, singer Jerry Graff, served with Reiner in the same Special Services unit of the U.S. Army in World War II; and singer/actress Roslyn Kind (Light of Love, Save the Country), who will share some memories of her longtime friendship with Reiner’s wife, actress and cabaret singer Estelle Reiner.
Also joining us will be comedy historian and longtime entertainment publicist Jeff Abraham, who worked with Carl Reiner on many occasions over the past seventeen years (including, most recently, with the National Comedy Center). Plus: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen, and a few surprises.
