This week’s program will commemorate the passing of Peter Tork, the actor, musician and composer who will be forever known around the world as the bass player of The Monkees. A classically trained musician, Tork was arguably the best pure musician among the four Monkees—and certainly the most versatile. He played several instruments, including bass guitar, banjo, harpsichord and keyboards (including the iconic piano introduction to “Daydream Believer”). He also co-wrote “For Pete’s Sake,” the anthem that became the closing theme of The Monkees TV series during the show’s second season. Peter Tork died this past Thursday, Feb. 21 at the age of 77.
You might recall that we paid tribute to Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones last year along with our friend Chuck Harter. Chuck not only wrote the acclaimed Disney Channel documentary Hey, Hey, We’re The Monkees, he interviewed Mike, Peter, Davy, Micky and just about every other key person behind the scenes of the Monkees phenomenon. We’ll discuss the legacy of the band, their impact on music and television, and more when we replay our tribute to The Monkees this week on TV Confidential.
