One of the most groundbreaking, well respected and beloved comedians of all time, Tom Dreesen traveled the country for fourteen years as the opening act for Frank Sinatra, whom he came to know as a mentor and a very close friend. A steady fixture on late night television for more than four decades, including sixty-one appearances on The Tonight Show and countless appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Tom has also performed with such entertainment legends as Sammy Davis Jr., Smokey Robinson, Liza Minnelli, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight and The Pips, and, for six years, actor/comedian Tim Reid—during which time he and Tim broke many barriers throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s as the first, and only, interracial stand-up comedy team.
While Tom’s work with Tim Reid and Frank Sinatra are both stories unto themselves, they are also just two chapters in a life story that, in many respects, embodies the American Dream. We’ll talk about that, plus Tom will tell us why his roots in Harvey, Illinois have always remained front and center throughout his life and career. Tom Dreesen will join us in our second hour.
Tom Dreesen’s memoir, Still Standing: My Journey from Streets and Saloons to the Stage, and Sinatra, includes great stories, not only of working with Tim Reid, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra, but of the many comedians that Tom got to know while honing his craft as a solo comedian at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, including Jay Leno, Freddie Prinze, Robin Williams, and David Letterman.
Also this week: We will play highlights from our November 2010 conversation with Ken Corday, executive producer of Days of Our Lives. Ken’s book, The Days of Our Lives: The True Story of One Family’s Dream and The Untold History of Days of Our Lives, not only chronicles the history of Days of Our Lives on television, but pays tribute to his parents, Ted and Betty Corday, the creators and original executive producers of the series. Days of Our Lives marked its fifty-fifth anniversary on television earlier this week.
NOTE. By now, I am sure all of you are aware of the passing of Alex Trebek, the longtime co-host of Jeopardy! We are putting together a tribute program for a future broadcast.
