The voice of Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Yakko Warner from Animaniacs, and both Raphael and Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rob Paulsen has brought joy to millions of children and adults over the past three decades. Also the creator, host, and producer of the popular podcast Talkin’ Toons, Rob has also filled concert halls and symphony halls across the country with the wildly successful Animaniacs in Concert series, while Animaniacs itself is coming back with brand new episodes that are scheduled to begin airing on Hulu in the winter of 2020.
Rob’s voice, however, was nearly silenced in 2016 when Rob learned that he was diagnosed with throat cancer. Fortunately for Rob, his cancer was treatable at the time it was detected—but the radiation treatment was brutal, and it took two years for him to rehabilitate and fully recover. Rob’s fight with cancer gave him a new lease on life and an even greater appreciation for his gift for creating voices. Rob shares his story in his inspiring memoir, Voice Lessons: How a Couple of Ninja Turtles, Pinky, and an Animaniac Saved My Life. Rob Paulsen will join us in our second hour.
Rob Paulsen is also this year’s spokesperson for The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA)’s annual Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness® Program (OHANCA®), which celebrates its twenty-second year in 2020. The cornerstone of OHANCA is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, when dozens of free oral, head and neck cancer screenings and awareness programs take place around the world. This year’s Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week takes place Apr. 13-19, 2020.
This week’s show will also include a return appearance by James DuMont, one of the busiest character actors in film and TV today. Currently seen as Danny McBride’s right-hand man on The Righteous Gemstones (which HBO recently renewed for a second season), James also guest-starred earlier this season on the popular CBS prime time dramas Blue Bloods and Magnum p.i.
James has prominent roles in two new movies that are now available for streaming on demand: Senator McClellan in The Banker, the first feature film produced by Apple TV (and which becomes available on Apple TV+ on Friday, Mar. 20), and “Tracksuit Charlie” in Spenser: Confidential, the new Netflix movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Peter Berg, that is based on the Spenser private eye novel Robert B. Parker’s Wonderland by Ace Atkins (available now for on-demand viewing on Netflix). Tracksuit Charlie’s flashy attire, coupled with the character’s Kill Bill yellow Corvette, has given James a newfound level of notoriety. We’ll talk about that, and more, when James DuMont joins us in our first hour.
Also in our first hour: Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated writer, producer, singer, and showbiz raconteur Geoffrey Mark (pictured right) will share a few memories of his friend Jack Sheldon (left), the brilliant jazz trumpeter and comedian whom some of you may remember as Merv Griffin’s sidekick throughout the 1970s. Also one of the many contributors to Schoolhouse Rock, including the songs “Conjunction Junction” and “I’m Just a Bill,” Jack Sheldon passed away Monday, Dec. 30 at age 88.
